π Southwest Coast of Orchid Island, Taiwan β Badai BayHidden beneath the waves off the southwestern coast of Orchid Island lies a hauntingly beautiful relic of steel and salt: the Fortress Wreck. Known locally as the Badai Bay Shipwreck, this site offers more than a dive β itβs an encounter with time, loss, and rebirth.
In October 1983, a Korean cargo ship en route from Japan to Singapore ran aground near Little Orchid Island due to poor sea conditions. After taking on water, the captain navigated the damaged vessel into the international anchorage at Badai Bay. The crew was safely evacuated, and the ship was eventually abandoned and sank.Decades passed, and this fallen vessel transformed into a steel reef teeming with marine life β now a bucket-list destination for divers from around the world.
Year | Event |
---|---|
1983 | Korean cargo ship ran aground near Little Orchid Island |
Late 1983 | Vessel was towed to Badai Bay anchorage and sank |
1990sβ2020s | Became an internationally known dive site and coral habitat |
Oct 2023 | Typhoon Koinu caused major damage to the structure and coral growth |
When I returned to Orchid Island as a dive instructor in 2020, the ship had already broken into these three parts. The stern remains the most accessible for divers, with the descent line anchored here for safety and ease.
The Fortress Wreck is more than a dive β it's a lesson. In one night, decades of coral growth were peeled away by natureβs force. What once felt eternal beneath the sea proved fragile and fleeting.
The sea never stays the same. Dive now, and dive respectfully.
