1. Transportation & Getting Around

  • License Required for Scooters: You must have an international or Taiwanese motorcycle license to rent a scooter. No license = no scooter.
  • Scooters Are the Most Popular Option: Affordable, convenient, and best for exploring the island.
  • Car Rentals Are Available But Expensive: If you prefer driving a car, you can rent one—but it costs more than scooters.
  • There Is Only One Bus: The island has a single bus, but its schedule is very limited. Don’t rely on it as your main transport.
  • Only One Gas Station: There is just one gas station on the entire island—plan your refueling accordingly.

2. Weather & Best Time to Visit

  • Best Season: March to June offers the best weather—warm, sunny, and fewer typhoons.
  • Avoid Typhoon Season: From July to September, typhoons can cause ferry and flight cancellations, leaving you stranded.
  • Summer is HOT: Bring sunscreen, a hat, and light, breathable clothing to protect yourself from the sun.

3. Local Culture & Respect

  • The Tao (Yami) People: Orchid Island is home to the Tao (Yami) indigenous tribe. Respect their traditions and way of life.
  • Don’t Touch Traditional Canoes: The wooden boats seen along the shore are sacred—DO NOT sit on or touch them.
  • No Staring at Traditional Attire: Men sometimes wear loincloths for cultural events—staring or laughing is disrespectful.
  • No Loud Behavior at Night: The island is peaceful, and locals prefer quiet evenings—keep noise levels low.

4. Food & Dining Tips

  • Flying Fish is the Specialty: It’s a must-try dish, served grilled, dried, or fried.
  • Taro-based Dishes Are Common: Be ready for meals made from taro (a starchy root vegetable).
  • Limited Restaurants & Shops: Most eateries close early (by 8-9 PM), so don’t expect late-night dining options.
  • Cash Only in Most Places: Few places accept credit cards, so bring enough cash (NTD).

5. Packing Essentials

  • Cash (NTD): ATMs don't work with foreign card, and many businesses don’t take credit cards. Simply bring plenty of cash .
  • Power Bank: Power outages can happen, so it’s good to have backup power for your phone.
  • Sunblocker & Mosquito Repellent: The sun is strong, and mosquitoes are common, especially near forests.
  • Rain Gear: Sudden showers happen even in the dry season—pack a light rain jacket or umbrella.

6. Safety & Other Tips

  • Strong Ocean Currents: Be cautious when swimming—some areas have dangerous currents.
  • No Diving Without Certification: If you plan to scuba dive, you better dive with a certified instructor.
  • Watch Out for Goats on the Road: They wander freely and can suddenly appear in front of your vehicle!
  • Emergency Services Are Limited: There is only one small hospital, so bring any personal medications you might need.
